An Empirical Investigation of Interproduct Relationships Between Domestic and Imported Seafood in the U.S. AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
This study seeks to identify interproduct relationships between domestic catfish and a representative selection of imported seafood. In doing so, this study uses multivariate cointegration and structural analyses. Multivariate cointegration analysis suggests that six imported seafood product groupings form a common market with domestic catfish. Structural analysis reveals that 1) domestic and imported catfish are net and gross quantity substitutes; 2) domestic catfish and imported seafood are normal goods; 3) six imported seafood products are identified as gross quantity substitutes for domestic catfish; and 4) according to the derived Allais coefficients, interaction intensities of imported seafood for domestic catfish (from greatest to least) are as...

Analysis of two precipitation methods on the yield, structural features and activity of sulfated polysaccharides from Gracilaria cornea (Rhodophyta) Biological Sciences
Souza, Ricardo Basto; Queiroz, Ismael Nilo Lino de; Silva Neto, Antônio Alves da; Carneiro, José Gerardo; Rodrigues, José Ariévilo Gurgel; Benevides, Norma Maria Barros.
The global demand for natural products from seaweeds has increased worldwide; however, no description of the use of isoamly alcohol (IAA) for obtaining of sulfated polysaccharides (SPs) has been reported. We investigated the efficiency of two precipitation methods (M) in obtaining SPs from the red seaweed Gracilaria cornea. SPs enzymatically isolated were concentrated with cetylpyridinium chloride (M I) or IAA (M II) and extracts were examined with regard to their yield, structural features and in vitro effects on the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) using normal human plasma and standard heparin (193 IU mg-1). Yield difference reached 12.99%. Quantitative determination of sulfate was similar between the two methods (̴ 26%), but extracts...

Characterization of New Oligosaccharides Obtained by An Enzymatic Cleavage of the Exopolysaccharide Produced by the Deep-Sea Bacterium Alteromonas infernus Using its Cell Extract ArchiMer
Akoumany, Katy; Zykwinska, Agata; Sinquin, Corinne; Marchand, Laetitia; Fanuel, Mathieu; Ropartz, David; Rogniaux, Hélène; Pipelier, Muriel; Delbarre Ladrat, Christine; Colliec Jouault, Sylvia.
Bacteria from deep-sea hydrothermal vents constitute an attractive source of bioactive molecules. In particular, exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by these bacteria become a renewable source of both biocompatible and biodegradable molecules. The low molecular weight (LMW) derivatives of the GY785 EPS produced by the deep-sea hydrothermal vent strain Alteromonas infernus have previously displayed some biological properties, similar to those of glycosaminoglycans (GAG), explored in cancer and tissue engineering. These GAG-mimetic derivatives are obtained through a free radical depolymerization process, which could, however, affect their structural integrity. In a previous study, we have shown that A. infernus produces depolymerizing enzymes active on its own...

Structural analysis of the Rio Preto fold belt (northwestern Bahia / southern Piauí), a doubly-vergent asymmetric fan developed during the Brasiliano Orogeny Anais da ABC (AABC)
CAXITO,FABRÍCIO A.; UHLEIN,ALEXANDRE; MORALES,LUIZ F.G.; EGYDIO-SILVA,MARCOS; SANGLARD,JULIO C.D.; DIAS,TATIANA G.; MENDES,MONICA C.O..
The Rio Preto fold belt borders the northwestern São Francisco craton and shows an exquisite kilometric doubly-vergent asymmetric fan structure, of polyphasic structural evolution attributed exclusively to the Brasiliano Orogeny (∼600-540 Ma). The fold belt can be subdivided into three structural compartments: The Northern and Southern compartments showing a general NE-SW trend, separated by the Central Compartment which shows a roughly E-W trend. The change of dip of S2, a tight crenulation foliation which is the main structure of the fold belt, between the three compartments, characterizes the fan structure. The Central Compartment is characterized by sub-vertical mylonitic quartzites, which materialize a system of low-T strike slip shear zones...

Structural analysis of the vegetation on a highland granitic rock outcrop in Southeast Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Caiafa,Alessandra N.; Silva,Alexandre F. da.
Granitic rock outcrops of the Brazilian southeast are either coastal or inland. The latter can often have high altitudes, such as in the summits of "Serra do Mar" and "Serra da Mantiqueira", where they are known as "Campos de Altitude". The landscape on these high altitude plateaux is often a mosaic of shrubs and treelets within a bunchgrass matrix, with sparse pteridophytes and other herbs, interspersed with variable extensions of rock outcrops. Despite the pervasiveness of rock outcrops in the Brazilian landscape, studies on the structural analysis of the vegetation on such formations are scarce. This study aimed to analyze the structure of the vegetation on a highland granitic rock outcrop in "Parque Estadual da Serra do Brigadeiro", state of Minas...
